Aye - cannot agree more on the "silence is golden" rule. if the CoP runs well and participants found it value-adding and did not even remember the facilitator "doing much" - the facilitator would have been deemed to have done a bang up job at facilitating the session ie achieving outcomes unobtrusively

    Set the tone early

    • Page 2: Position participants as expert in the way they practice; position facilitator as there to facilitate and NOT there as a content expert.
    • Page 3: Set the expectations for thoughtful writing, peer-to-peer discussion, and notes from peer discussions.

    Thoughtful writing

    • Ask participants to discuss what they wrote.
    Learning notes
    • Facilitators need to create note-taking expectations by frequently bringing the member notes into the discussions.
    Practice discussion
    • Our practice discussions are not about HR or people management issues. Instead they are about how we practice in relationship to issues.
    • If the group is actively engaged in discussion about their practices, don’t over facilitate. Let them take the lead.
    • Use TRQs to energise the discussion if it slows down.
    • Be sure to ask participants to discuss what they wrote in their learning notes.
General facilitation reminders about asking questions
    • Don’t make a statement if you can ask a question.
    • Be patient; give people a chance to think and to organize their thoughts. Your silence is a powerful tool.
    • Use questions to guide the discussion into productive domains.
    • NEVER ask a question and ignore or discount the answer. Instead, reinforce the contribution.
    Electronic polling
    • We recommend the use of keypad polling. It is easy to use.
    • Contact Lim Hong Tan at HCS. He is expert in the system and can help you learn to use it. Templates will be prepared in advance by HCS.
    Room set up
    • We recommend the tables be set up in a square for 16 people, 4 to a side, and toward the front of the room.
    • Except for polling and posting to the Practice Library, we recommend you NOT use computer projection.
    • Facilitator should not sit in the usual “meeting leader” seat. Instead sit as a participant. The co-facilitator (if there is one) should sit at the corner near a flipchart and by the computer.
    • If observers are present, keep them as far in the background as possible (e.g., seated at a separate table in the back of the room).
    Posting to the Practice Library
    • We recommend the participants post findings to the Practice Library live from the workshop. It is best if a participant does the posting.
    • This means you need a valid login to www.hr.cop.com.sg , a computer and access to the internet.
