The Top 3 Issues
1. Performance culture: In nurturing a performance culture, formalized performance management measures have to be established. Such measures are to be able to holistically ascertain contributions of individuals toward achieving the CBF outcomes with the work area. Rewards and renumerations will include measures put in place to improve the employees work experience and personal growth/learning. The contributions of employees will go beyond dollars and cents. These contributions may carry intrinsic values such as innate knowledge, experience, and loyalty, which is invaluable to the organization
2. Linking workforce personal goals with organisation’s goals: More can be done to align personal goals of employees with that of organizational goals. This will require both employers and employees to look at work-life balance as a contributing factor to business performance. Also, ensuring workplace safety, healthy lifestyles and ethical business practices will take precedence over achieving monetary bottom-lines
3. Trainability of workforce: Fundamental revisions to existing mental models on the trainability of the diverse groups within our workforce have to be carried out. While the need for both employers and employees to commit to life-long continual training is well-established, our training systems and methodologies must evolve to cater to the varied training and learning needs of our workforce. Besides pedagogy and andragogy, recognition should also be given to the growing field of gerontology, which focuses on the needs of the elderly. The adage that you cannot teach an old dog new tricks must evolve into of different strokes for different folks. In the same vein, it must also be recognized that there is a limit to what and how much individuals can learn. With this, the existing bias towards younger employees can be minimised and greater effort channeled towards integrating the old with existing skills within the business outfit.
